St Simon Likas marks parish feast day with launching of fundraising for Catholic Centre

The confirmands and first communicants pose with the concelebrants and their teachers, 29 Oct 2017, St Simon Likas.

LIKAS – St Simon’s Church here marked its 33rd anniversary with the launching of the fundraising for the Catholic Centre on 29 Oct 2017.

The occasion was the pastoral visit of Archbishop John Wong on its patronal feast day – St Simon the Zealot, Apostle and Martyr.

Concelebrating the Mass with Abp Wong were Archbishop Emeritus John Lee and Father Cosmas Lee, the rector.

As in past years, the prelate administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to 29 candidates and First Eucharist to 31 children.

To the confirmands (rite of passage to spiritual adulthood), Abp Wong warned them of three enemies they have encountered and will encounter: lack of self-acceptance, worldliness (greed for worldly possessions), and temptation to do evil.

After Mass, all adjourned to the parish hall for the reception and the launching of the fundraising for the Catholic Centre.

Instead of the usual speech, Fr Lee explained the need for a new Catholic Centre, which he said was not a new idea but one that was mooted 20 years ago.

The parish has been tasked to contribute about half a million Ringgit toward the building project which will be sited at the former Shan Tao Primary School at Jalan Sang Kancil 3 near the Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Fr Lee said there will be three fundraisers: food fair/bazaar on Feb 4, a monthly third collection and personal pledges.

However, he reminded the parishioners that part of the proceeds from any common fundraisers will go toward the building projects of the two schools under the parish: St James Primary School Hall (20%) and an IT block for SM Shan Tao (30%).

In his brief address before he declared the fundraising launch, Abp Wong urged the parents of the first communicants to help them “fall in love” with Jesus so that they will become his disciples and be sent by him to others.

KK prelate urges parents of first communicants to help them “fall in love with Jesus”

The six candidates from the sign language class as they wait outside the Sacred Heart Cathedral Karamunsing for the entrance procession, 28 Oct 2017.

KOTA KINABALU – Archbishop John Wong urged the parents of first communicants to help them “fall in love with Jesus” in a homily on 28 Oct 2017.

He said this during the Sunset Mass at the Sacred Heart Cathedral here where 146 children including six from the Sign Language Class received Jesus for the first time.

He explained that if the children are helped to fall in love with Jesus, it will be the beginning of a relationship with Him.

Joining him at the altar was Msgr Nicholas Ong of Sandakan Diocese.

Around 87 children received their first Holy Communion at the BM Mass Oct 29 while another 45 will receive theirs at the Chinese Mass on Nov 5.

First Holy Communion is the common name for a person’s first reception of the sacrament of the Eucharist.  The Church recognises the importance of this event as the Eucharist is the central focus of the sacramental life of the Catholic Church.

Special clothing is usually worn. The clothing is often white to symbolise purity. Girls often wear fancy dresses and a veil attached to a headdress while the boys will wear a bow tie.

After the Mass all adjourned to the parish hall for the reception and presentation of certificates.

KOTA KINABALU – Kota Kinabalu Archdiocese hosted for the first time the Malaysian Bishops Conference at Vianney Home Dontozidon on 23-27 Oct 2017.

Twelve arch/bishops attended the conference which tackled various issues confronting the local Malaysian Church and coming out with common guidelines on those issues.

Among the guidelines are those on child protection and education.

The participants also discussed the forthcoming Malaysian Catholic Clergy Assembly scheduled for July 2018 at Majodi Centre Plentong Johor.  This explained the presence of Archbishop Emeritus John Ha of Kuching who has been tasked to facilitate the retreat of the participants.

Penang Diocese will host the next conference in 2018 while the first conference was held in Kuala Lumpur last year.

LSS draws over 100 participants

A section of the participants attending the Life in the Spirit Seminar, 26-29 Oct 2017, SHPC.

KOTA KINABALU – Over 100 people participated in the Life in the Spirit Seminar (LSS) on 26-29 Oct 2017 at the Sacred Heart Parish Centre here organised by the Light of Jesus Christ Covenant Community (LJCCC).

The LSS is commonly used by Catholic groups in the context of renewal in the Church.  It is an instrument for bringing people into a deeper experience of the work of the Holy Spirit. The seminar offers the basic presentation of the Gospel and the basic teaching about what the Lord is willing to do for all who come to Him.  It provides a way to learn more about living in the Spirit.  And the participants can take steps which will allow Jesus to establish, restore or deepen a relationship with them.

For those who have experienced the sacramental graces, Jesus will give them a new and fuller relationship with Himself.

The Church has never lost the life of the Spirit nor the experience of the Power of the Spirit.

Ever since the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) has swept Sabah shores in 1974, the LSS has been one of the stable features in the life of the Local Church and is conducted once or more in a year in English, BM, Chinese or Kadazan.

SHC-PPC organises BM conference for married men

KOTA KINABALU – The Parish Pastoral Council of Sacred Heart Cathedral organised a conference for married men in Bahasa Malaysia at the Sacred Heart Parish Centre here on 27-28 Oct 2017.

This conference is designed specifically for married men to come together to share their joys and sorrows, and to learn how best to carry out their roles, guided by scriptures and the teachings of the Church.

It focuses on the crucial role of the father in the family.  The failure of families to fulfill the mandate of God is often attributed to the failure of fathers to live out their true roles.

There were four inputs: (1) God’s Plan for Fatherhood (Fr Joshua Liew); (2) A Father’s Response to a Fast and Changing World (Marc Majaing); (3) Redeeming Love (Petrus Maximus); and  (4) How Do I Love Thee? (Johnny Thien) with some surprise elements.

Thirty-eight men participated in the conference.

CHRIST-CENTERED COMMUNITY, SERVING ONE ANOTHER WITH LOVE

Tawau: 18 October 2017 marked another historical moment for the Diocese of Sandakan, not only that they celebrated their 10th anniversary of the erection of the diocese and the episcopal ordination of His Lordship Bishop Datuk Julius Dusin Gitom, but also the unveiling and launching of their Vision and Mission Statements of the diocese.  These triple joy celebrations were hosted by the Parish of Holy Trinity Church, Tawau.

In light with the launching of the Vision and Mission (V & M) statements, the committee organized a Talk, a day earlier at 2.00pm in the parish hall. The Talk was on Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) delivered by His Eminence Cardinal Anthony Soter Fernandez and later followed by questions and answers session. Since BEC is the pastoral thrust of this diocese, it is pertinent that it goes in the same direction in fulfilling the vision and mission of the diocese. In view of the importance of understanding and ownership of the V & M, the next session was allocated for a briefing on the V & M and Pastoral Plan of the Diocese of Sandakan by Mr. Pilis Malim, the Chairman Diocesan Focus Committee. In his briefing, he shared that it took them seven tedious years in formulating the V & M and finally seven lettered words summed up the statements which will guide the diocese in the coming years. It is the wish of the diocese that all parishes within its jurisdiction will incorporate the V & M to their pastoral planning. Around three hundred lay leaders, Bishops, Priests and Religious attended the Talk and Briefing.

Mr. Reynaldo De Los Santos

Later in the evening, the organisers headed by Mr. Reynaldo De Los Santos, hosted a dinner reception to commemorate the celebration in one of the leading hotels in town.

The summit of the 10th anniversary celebration was marked by a Thanksgiving Eucharistic Mass presided over by His Lordship Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom and con-celebrated by His Eminence Cardinal Anthony Soter Fernandez, His Grace Archbishop John Wong of Kota Kinabalu Archdiocese, His Lordship Bishop Cornelius Sim of Brunei Vicariate, His Lordship Bishop Cornelius Piong of Keningau Diocese, Rev. Msgr. Nicholas Ong of Holy Trinity Tawau, and all the priests from Sandakan and Keningau Dioceses. Among the 800 attendees, were the Mother General of the FSIC, religious nuns and the Parish Pastoral Chairmen and their councillors, Lay leaders from the five parishes within the Sandakan diocese (Holy Trinity Church Tawau, St. Mary Cathedral Sandakan, St. Dominic Lahad Datu, St. Martin Telupid, Our Lady of Fatima Beluran and St. Francis Assisi Paitan Mission).

During His Lordship homily, he unveiled the Vision and Mission Statements of the Diocese as, “CHRIST-CENTERED COMMUNITY, SERVING ONE ANOTHER WITH LOVE”.  In his homily, the prelate called upon the congregation to reflect on the character of St. Luke which is also the Saint’s Feast Day. He invited all to discern and reflect on the Saint’s characteristics to live in communion with others, encouraging each other and supporting each other, merciful, caring, concern, and committed to building the church of God. He further hoped to see a community that will share their talent, wisdom, knowledge, and energy towards achieving the diocese vision and mission.

After the Eucharistic celebration, Rev. Msgr. Nicholas Ong, the hosting parish, and Rector gave his address to the congregation for their support in making this celebration a success. In his short message, he stressed on a few points through – the BEC program as a platform in achieving the V & M, Eucharist as the priority of life, live in harmony within the community, deepening the faith to the younger generation for a continuity of the mission and, in a lighter jest, an encouragement for the family to multiply more.

While on his brief speech, His Eminence Cardinal Anthony Soter Fernandez stressed on the oneness of all human race as people of God, living as one human race and in the presence of God. His Eminence reminded all that a true Christian only knows one language, that is, the language of “Love” as what the diocese V & M propagated.

In His Lordship Bishop Julius keynote address, he thanked God for this auspicious event of the 10th Anniversary of the Diocese of Sandakan. He acknowledges that not only the diocese celebrating this three-in-one-event but the diocese was honoured, for the first time in the history of this diocese, to have a Cardinal present to witness this celebration.

His Lordship Bishop Datuk Julius Dusin Gitom concluded the speech by sharing his hope to all the faithful in the Diocese of Sandakan, “10 years of a journey as one Diocese has taught us the importance of understanding, accepting, respecting and consideration within parishes, priests, Religious, lay Leaders and also as parishioners. There are many ups and downs: failures, tiredness, conflicts, but at the same time, we also experienced joy, happiness, peacefulness and spiritual and physical growth in our journey. Formulating the Vision and Mission consider a long and challenging part but to implement it is another challenge that will take longer time through perseverance and patience.” The prelate ends his address by encouraging all the delegates and representatives of the 5 parishes of Diocese Sandakan to dedicate their wisdom, talent, knowledge, to be committed and determine towards the achievement of the Vision and Mission Statements.

Witness by the congregation and the 3 other Dioceses and the Cardinal of Malaysia, His Lordship officially launched the Vision and Mission statement followed by signing the Diocesan Pastoral Plan Documents which were then handed over to the representatives of each Parishes, Paitan Mission and a copy given to the Cardinal and the Arch/Bishops of the visiting 3 Dioceses ( Kota Kinabalu, Keningau and Brunei Darussalam ).
